Self Portrait as a Series of Hard Exteriors
The lobster, always.
Cellar door or reflection
in glass block. The side of a city bus
after weeks of snow. Chitinous insect,
staghorn beetle, earwig, all of brood X.
A scallop’s scaffolding cuticle.
Sheet metal, standing seam roof,
a shovel propped against a wall.
Anything beak. Brick house.
Billboard down a rural road.
Roughhewn handle
of a forgotten axe. Level off plumb.
Tool off sharp. The mind’s lost
icesheet shifting in its glacier.
Catherine Wing is the author of two collections of poetry, Enter Invisible and Gin & Bleach. She lives in Cleveland, Ohio.
